Clinical decision-making and authorising blood component transfusion

A Framework to Support Non-Medical Healthcare Professionals (PDF 450KB) was produced by the UK and Ireland Blood Transfusion Network Education Working Group in 2022. It is an update of Jan Green and Liz Pirie's ‘A Framework to Support Nurses and Midwives Making the Clinical Decision and Providing the Written Instruction for Blood Component Transfusion’, originally published in 2009.

The intention for the revised framework document remains to provide clearly defined guidance for experienced registered and regulated healthcare professionals who need to extend their role to authorise blood component transfusion and their organisations.
