Conn’s syndrome (primary hyperaldosteronism) is caused by overproduction of aldosterone in the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone is a hormone that regulates potassium and sodium levels as well as fluid balance in the body thereby maintaining blood volume and blood pressure, helping the body to control stress and maintain a steady metabolic state and normal electrolyte balance.
Secondary hyperaldosteronism is caused by increased adrenal production by medical conditions outside the adrenal gland which stimulates the renin- angiotensin- aldosterone mechanism.
