Obligatory

Must not donate if:

Associated with malignancy.

Discretionary

If underlying cause of thrombocytopenia is not a contraindication, accept. Refer to relevant entry.

Refer to Designated Clinical Support Officer if further advice required.

If treated with immunoglobulin:

• Immunoglobulin therapy
• Transfusion
• Malignancy

If treated with plasma exchange:

• Transfusion

If treated with immunosuppressive therapy:

• Immunosuppression

If treated with splenectomy:

• Splenectomy
• Transfusion

Additional information

Immune thrombocytopenia can be associated with malignancies, especially haematological malignancies such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
